Rule applied: Smarta — The tithi touches two days; the later day, where it is joined with the following tithi (para-viddha), is preferred.

Why this date?
  • The tithi touches two days; the later (para-viddha) day is preferred — the tithi-pair (yugma) rule of Nirnaya Sindhu.

How the date is determined

  1. It recurs every lunar month on Krishna Paksha Amavasya.
  2. It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
  3. If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
  4. When the tithi prevails for at least three muhurtas (a fifth) of the daylight on two days, the later day, joined with the following tithi, is taken (the tithi-pair (yugma) rule of Nirnaya Sindhu).
  5. If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.

Traditional variation

Darsha Amavasya rites (tarpan/shraddha) are fixed by Aparahna; the udaya tithi is shown here. When Amavasya prevails at two sunrises, the second day is shown if Amavasya lasts at least three muhurtas into it. Somvati Amavasya is this day when it falls on a Monday. Some almanacs, including the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang, also name Somvati Amavasya when Amavasya begins on the Monday, even after sunset: it prints Somvati Amavasya on Monday 13 July 2026, when Amavasya begins at 18:50 IST, while by this rule the Amavasya in India is Tuesday 14 July.

This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.

Rule source: Amavasya at sunrise. When Amavasya also prevails at least three muhurtas of the next day's daylight (Amavasya at two sunrises), the Pratipada-joined, later day by the tithi-yugma rule (Amavasya–Pratipada pair; Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 1, the yugma-vakya of Garuda Purana, Acharakanda 1.128.16-17). The weekday of this day is the one used for Somvati (Monday) Amavasya.

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
