Rule applied: Smarta — A kshaya tithi touches no sunrise; it is observed on the Hindu day in which it begins and ends.
Why this date?
- A kshaya tithi touches no sunrise; it is observed on the Hindu day in which it begins and ends.
How the date is determined
- The date is Shravana Shukla Paksha Tritiya; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
- If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
Observed on the day Tritiya prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi, the almanac convention); when Tritiya is present at two sunrises, the first day is taken. Hartalika Teej, the Bhadrapada Gauri vrata, has its own Nirnaya Sindhu rule preferring the Chaturthi-joined day; Hariyali Teej, a lokachara vrata with no ruling of its own, is kept by the almanac udaya convention instead, so a calendar that applies the Chaturthi-joined preference here would give the next day in such years.
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
Rule source: North Indian lokachara Gauri vrata (Sindhara / Hariyali Teej) with no Nirnaya Sindhu or Dharma Sindhu ruling of its own, dated by the almanac udaya convention: the day on which Shravana Shukla Tritiya prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi); at two sunrises the first day; touching no sunrise, the day that contains it. Unlike Hartalika Teej, no Chaturthi-yukta nirnaya is applied
