How the date is determined

It recurs every lunar month on Shukla Paksha Ashtami.
It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
When the tithi prevails for at least three muhurtas (a fifth) of the daylight on two days, the later day, joined with the following tithi, is taken (the tithi-pair (yugma) rule of Nirnaya Sindhu).
If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.

When Ashtami also prevails at least three muhurtas of the next day's daylight (Ashtami at two sunrises), the Navami-joined, later day by the tithi-yugma rule (Ashtami–Navami pair; Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 1, the yugma-vakya of Garuda Purana, Acharakanda 1.128.16-17), which also avoids the Saptami-joined Ashtami that the Durgashtami rules reject.
