How the date is determined
- In the Amanta system (months end at the new moon) this is Vaishakha Krishna Paksha Amavasya; in the Purnimanta system used in most of North India (months end at the full moon) the same day is called Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha Amavasya.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
- If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
Odisha convention (udaya tithi), the same day as Shani Jayanti. The North Indian Vat Savitri Vrat is dated by Amavasya in the afternoon and can fall a day earlier (26 May 2025, when Odisha kept 27 May).
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
Rule source: Savitri-vrata as kept in Odisha (Sabitri Amabasya) on Jyeshtha Amavasya (Purnimanta Jyeshtha Krishna 15), dated by the udaya tithi of vratas: the day on which Amavasya prevails at sunrise ("yam tithim samanuprapya udayam yati bhaskarah, sa tithih sakala jneya snana-dana-vratadishu", quoted in Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 1); Amavasya at two sunrises → the first; at no sunrise → the day on which it begins and ends. Government of Odisha holiday lists (Savitri Amavasya): 30 May 2022, 19 May 2023, 6 Jun 2024, 27 May 2025, 16 May 2026.
