How the date is determined

  1. In the Amanta system (months end at the new moon) this is Vaishakha Krishna Paksha Amavasya; in the Purnimanta system used in most of North India (months end at the full moon) the same day is called Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha Amavasya.
  2. It falls on the day when this tithi prevails during Aparahna — the fourth fifth of the daytime, in the afternoon.
  3. If the tithi prevails at that time on two consecutive days, the day on which it covers more of that period is taken.
  4. If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
  5. In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.

Traditional variation

North Indian date: the day with Amavasya in the afternoon (Aparahna), which can be the day before Shani Jayanti when Amavasya begins around midday (e.g. 26 May 2025). Odisha keeps Savitri Amavasya on the day of Amavasya at sunrise (27 May 2025), listed separately. In Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka the vrat is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima (Vat Purnima).

This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.

Rule source: North Indian Savitri-vrata on Jyeshtha Amavasya (Purnimanta Jyeshtha Krishna 15). Day rule unchanged, pending review: the Amavasya that prevails at Aparahna (the 4th of the 5 parts of the daytime); when it touches the Aparahna of two days, the day of greater coverage. No Nibandha karmakala for the Savitri vrata has been identified to confirm or replace the Aparahna, and no official North Indian date was found to test it against. Nirnaya Sindhu allows the Chaturdashi-joined Amavasya for this vrata alone ("bhutaviddha na kartavya darsha purnima kadachana, varjayitva ... savitrivratam", quoted there); the Aparahna rule takes that day when Amavasya begins before its Aparahna (26 May 2025), and the next day when Amavasya covers only part of the first Aparahna and the whole of the next (30 May 2022). The Odisha observance is a separate rule (savitri_amavasya_odisha, udaya Amavasya).

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
