Karana

Half a tithi. Sixty karanas make a lunar month: seven movable karanas repeat eight times, and four fixed ones (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) fall around the new moon.

How this site calculates it

The elongation is divided into 6° steps. The first half of Shukla Pratipada is Kimstughna, the next 56 half-tithis cycle through Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija and Vishti, and the last three are Shakuni, Chatushpada and Naga.
