How it works

The weekday (vara) changes at sunrise: a moment before sunrise on Tuesday morning still belongs to Monday in the Panchang. The Panchang of a date on this site therefore runs from that date's sunrise to the next morning's sunrise.

The tithi, nakshatra and yoga of the day are those prevailing at sunrise (udaya). Festival rules often look at other parts of the day instead: midday (Madhyahna), afternoon (Aparahna), dusk (Pradosh) or midnight (Nishita).

Sunrise is the moment the Sun's upper limb appears on the horizon of the selected place, allowing for atmospheric refraction. That is why Panchang times differ from city to city.

In this site's engine

Sunrise and sunset come from astronomy-engine for the place's coordinates, with the Sun's disc as defined by the calculation profile; the day's tithi is the one whose interval contains sunrise.
