Shloka of the day

Shloka of the day Friday, 23 January 2026

One Sanskrit verse a day from the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, the Vedas, subhashitas and well-known stotras, with transliteration and meaning. 132 verses in rotation.

Bhagavad Gita 3.35

śreyānsvadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmātsvanuṣṭhitāt |

svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ ||

Meaning

Better one’s own duty, even imperfectly done, than another’s duty done well. Better to die in one’s own duty; another’s duty is full of danger.

The meaning is our own short paraphrase, not a word-for-word translation.
