When two tithis are present in Aparahna on the same day, both Shraddhas fall on that date; when a tithi is kshaya, its Shraddha shares a day with a neighbouring tithi.

How the Shraddha day is chosen

Shraddha is performed for an ancestor on the tithi of their passing. The Shraddha day is the day on which that tithi prevails during Aparahna (the fourth of five equal parts of the daytime); if it touches Aparahna on two days, the day with the greater coverage is taken.

Kutup Muhurat is the eighth and Rohina Muhurat the ninth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas; Aparahna follows them. The rites are usually begun in Kutup or Rohina and completed before the end of Aparahna.

Chaturdashi Shraddha is traditionally reserved for ancestors who died by weapons, accidents or other unnatural causes. Those who passed away naturally on a Chaturdashi are usually remembered on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Mahalaya) is for all ancestors, including those whose tithi of passing is not known.

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
