Nepal's calendar is fixed each year by the Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Bikas Samiti and published by the Government of Nepal. The official calendar is authoritative. Months marked "Calculated" follow the Nepal rule and can differ from the official calendar by a day.
How these dates are calculated
Month-start rules as documented by Sewell and Dikshit, The Indian Calendar (1896). The Sankranti moment and sunrise/sunset are calculated for the selected place with the chosen calculation profile.
- Tamil rule: Sankranti before sunset, the month begins that day; otherwise the next day.
- Kerala rule: Sankranti before 3/5 of the daytime has passed (the end of Madhyahna, when Aparahna begins), the month begins that day; otherwise the next day.
- Bengal rule: Sankranti between sunrise and midnight, the month begins the next day; after midnight, the day after that.
- Odisha rule: the month begins on the calendar day of the Sankranti.
- Nepal rule (Bikram Sambat): the month begins on the calendar day, in Nepal time, on which the Sun enters the sign by the Surya Siddhanta, at any hour. Where the Government of Nepal has published the months, the published dates are used.
Many Tamil almanacs use the Vakya system, whose Sankranti times differ from the modern (drik) calculation by hours, so the Tamil month can begin one day later. For example, in 2025 the drik Sankranti into Karka was in the late afternoon of 16 July, IST (before sunset, so Aadi 1 is 16 July by the drik rule, as in drik-based Panchangs), while many printed Tamil calendars show Aadi 1 on 17 July.
Pohela Boishakh follows the traditional West Bengal rule. Bangladesh uses a revised calendar in which Pohela Boishakh is always on 14 April. Bengali almanacs also differ slightly on Sankrantis very close to midnight.
The Gujarati year (Vikram Samvat) begins on Kartika Shukla Pratipada, usually the day after Diwali, so it is one less than the North Indian Vikram Samvat from Chaitra until Diwali.
No era year is shown for the Odia calendar, whose traditional eras do not follow a single solar rule.
Nepali (Bikram Sambat) months follow the Sun of the Surya Siddhanta, whose Sankrantis come several hours after the modern (Lahiri) ones (about 2 to 16 hours in 2023 to 2027), not the modern Sun used for the other calendars on this page. The rule was checked against all 48 months published by the Government of Nepal for BS 2080 to 2083 (Ministry of Home Affairs holiday notices in the Nepal Rajpatra): it gives 47 of them. The exception is Magh 2082, published as 15 January 2026, a day after the Surya Siddhanta Sankranti (21:10 Nepal time on 14 January). Published months are shown wherever they are available.
Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
