Shloka of the day

Shloka of the day Saturday, 28 February 2026

One Sanskrit verse a day from the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, the Vedas, subhashitas and well-known stotras, with transliteration and meaning. 132 verses in rotation.

Bhagavad Gita 6.5

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् ।uddharedātmanātmānaṃ nātmānamavasādayet |

आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ॥ātmaiva hyātmano bandhurātmaiva ripurātmanaḥ ||

Meaning

Lift yourself by your own self; do not let yourself sink. The self alone is one’s friend, and the self alone is one’s enemy.

अपने द्वारा अपना उद्धार करो, स्वयं को गिरने मत दो। मनुष्य स्वयं ही अपना मित्र है और स्वयं ही अपना शत्रु।

The meaning is our own short paraphrase, not a word-for-word translation.
