Shloka of the day

Shloka of the day Thursday, 24 September 2026

One Sanskrit verse a day from the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, the Vedas, subhashitas and well-known stotras, with transliteration and meaning. 132 verses in rotation.

Katha Upanishad 1.2.2

śreyaśca preyaśca manuṣyametastau samparītya vivinakti dhīraḥ |

śreyo hi dhīro'bhi preyaso vṛṇīte preyo mando yogakṣemādvṛṇīte ||

Meaning

The good and the pleasant both come to a person. The wise examine them and choose the good over the pleasant; the foolish choose the pleasant for the sake of getting and keeping.

The meaning is our own short paraphrase, not a word-for-word translation.
